Organized into local school districts, Monterey County offers a wide range of educational services from Head Start programs to the California State University system’s newest campus at Monterey Bay. Although educational opportunities are diverse, all share the common characteristic of being open to parent and student input. Community involvement and support are part of the reason that local school districts have been repeatedly recognized for excellence.
Salinas has five elementary school districts, one high school district-the Salinas Union High School District, a community college district, and several private schools, including two Catholic elementary schools and two Catholic high schools. Some elementary and high schools operate on a year-round schedule, and there are opportunities for cross-district education in some cases.
A well-established and innovative community college, a nearby state university and several business schools make it possible for students to continue schooling beyond high school. Hartnell College offers two-year degree and occupational certificate programs. Working with the California State University and University of California systems, the college also prepares students for transfer to upper division courses. California State University Monterey Bay (CSUMB) opened in the fall of 1995 on the former Fort Ord military base, bringing the state university system to the Salinas area.
Graduate studies are available through Golden Gate University, Monterey Institute of International Studies and Chapman College. Moss Landing Marine Laboratory and Monterey College of Law offer specialized degree programs
Central Coast College, Heald Business College and Hartnell College offer programs that prepare students for entry-level jobs in a number of local industries.
